Game On!
Like the rest of the world, we have been challenged to
create a new normal in the midst of a pandemic. What is life supposed to look
like while you try to remain safe and keep your family safe in these historic
times. Not only that, the college where the hubby coaches has decided to proceed
with basketball during the Spring semester. In our lifetime, we have not experienced
basketball season being postponed for any length of time, surely not an entire
semester.
At first glance, we were disappointed to hear that
basketball wasn’t going to happen for several more months. It was already hard
enough to have to end last season with no goodbyes to the first time he head coached.
We didn’t get to hug them and congratulate them on making decisions about their
next stop in their basketball careers. There was no final team dinner of the
season. There was no graduation. As disappointing as that was, we knew that it
was necessary.
We never thought that this year would start off this way. But
before we could get too deep in our feelings, the Lord snatched us up. It wasn’t
that there was no basketball, there just aren’t any games that are open to the
public. The players are still here on campus. They can bind as a unit and
determine their identity. They are still available to build their culture as a
team. They are still here for us to pour into and minister to. They are exactly
where they need to be, but what about our focus?
So many times we are blinded to the blessings of preparation
because it’s not as glamorous as performance.
I know this pandemic has been tough on people. Some have even
lost their lives or their loved ones. This is not to diminish any of those real
experiences. But for us to shift our perspective on the time we’ve been given,
since we do still have life.
Maybe the stage isn’t as awe-inspiring as you would like but
God has given you new opportunities during this unprecedented time. You may not
have an audience, but God wants you to prepare for when the audience does come.
Can you be faithful to the process even when no one is looking? Are you doing the
work that’s necessary behind the scenes to prepare you to sustain what God has
in store for you? Don’t forsake the process of setting a foundation because no
one is watching. This could be the most important part of your journey.
The team has already started 6am workouts even though the
season doesn’t start for 5 more months/ They aren’t missing the opportunities
to be better, just because they don’t have an external appointment. They know
that the war is won if they can win the battle of disciplining themselves
BEFORE they are put to the test. True greatness is built in the obscurity of preparation,
not in the spotlight of competition.
With all that said….GAME ON!
